What makes BOOM Gel Stain special?

So let’s go, Australian Made Boom Gel Stain FAQS:

What substrates does Boom Gel Stain work on?

Wood, Glass, Metal, Fabric, Pottery, Wicker, Concrete, Laminate and just about anything else you want to stain!

Using Boom’s Metallic Gold Gel Stain:  Please note, our metallic gold gel stain is the ‘heaviest’ product in the range, therefore, always pour onto glass decorator items FIRST and on your canvas art pieces, pour it LAST!

What are the approximate water dilution percentages needed to create various treatment?

As a Paint, Heavy Glaze or Antiquing and Dry Brushing – use straight from the bottle or use a 10% ratio of water to dilute.

As a Light Glaze, Light White Wash or for Light Antiquing – use a 10% to 30% ratio of water to dilute.

As a Wood Stain (Bare Wood) or a dye for Stained Surfaces – use a 30% to 50% ratio of water to dilute.

For Bare Distressed Wood, use a 50% to 70% ratio of water to dilute.

For Fabric (up to 85% for spraying) – use a 60% to 80% ratio of water to dilute.

For Concrete and Pottery – We highly recommend sealing your concrete or pottery with one or two coats of matte or gloss sealant (depending how porous the concrete or pottery) prior to using BOOM.  Use BOOM straight from the bottle or use anywhere up to a 90% ratio of water to dilute.

Ah, and for Glass – use straight from the bottle or up to a 30% ratio of water to dilute.  For longevity of your designer item, we highly recommend an ozone friendly spray gloss or matte sealer, such as ‘National Art Materials’ sealants.

Can Boom Gel Stain be used outdoors?

Yes.  For a high gloss finish, seal with Boom Gel Stain Gloss Finish. For better protection and a higher gloss, repeat coats of sealer as indicated on the product’s instructions. High Gloss Sealers will help achieve a three dimensional look.

Will BOOM Gel Stain applied to fabric be water resistant and machine washable?

Yes, fabric will retain much of the Boom Gel Stain colour if treated before washing (see various methods below)*.  For best results, wash in cold water by hand (with very little laundry detergent).  Rinse with cold water.  Various methods to increase the colorfastness of the Boom Gel Stain before washing are as follows:

Fabric Medium:  Mix a Fabric Medium (such as Global Fabric & Textile Medium) with BOOM Gel Stain according to instructions on the Fabric Medium bottle.

Fabric protectant:  (such as Scotchgard Fabric Protector) Let BOOM Gel Stain dry.  Apply protectant.  Allow to dry as indicated on product. Let set for 24 hours before washing.

Hair Dryer:  Let BOOM Gel Stain dry.  Use hottest blow dryer setting to heat fabric until fabric is hot.  Allow to cool back down to room temperature.  Let set for 24 hours before washing.

Iron:  Let BOOM Gel Stain dry.  Put iron on hottest setting (without moisture).  Lay wax paper over fabric.  Iron front and back of fabric until hot.  Allow to cool back down to room temperature.  Let set for 24 hours before washing.

Vinegar:  Put fabric with your dried BOOM Gel Stain design in cold water/vinegar at a 1:1 ratio mix.  Let set in vinegar for 24 hours.  Rinse with cold water and a very small amount of laundry detergent immediately after removing from water/vinegar solution.  Lay flat to dry.

Clothes dryer:  Put fabric with your dried BOOM Gel Stain design in dryer for 1 hour on hottest setting.  Remove and allow to cool to room temperature.  Let set for 24 hours before washing.

NOTE:  If a more washed-out look is desired:  Let set for 24 hours before washing.  Machine wash in gentle cycle with cold water.  Machine dry if desired.

Can custom colours be created?

Yes. Mix BOOM Gel Stain colours together to create your own special colour OR mix most any water-based paint (chalk style) with BOOM Gel Stain to create custom colours.
